Introduction: In the case of damage to the vital organs of patients who are in the terminal phase of the disease, organ transplantation is the only possible method of treatment to enable them to survive, that is, to improve the quality of life. Many generally accepted beliefs and attitudes about donation play a significant role in the decision to become an organ donor. It has been shown that the most common obstacles in donating organs are fear, ignorance and/or religious beliefs, which additionally contributes to the creation of negative attitudes. Objective: to investigate and describe the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students at the Faculty of Health Studies about organ donation. Methods: A total of 112 nursing students from the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka participated in the research. The students' knowledge and attitudes about organ donation were examined with an author's questionnaire, which was compiled based on the available literature exclusively for the purposes of this research. Results: 53.6% of students have a satisfactory level of knowledge, and 41.1% of students have a low level of knowledge about organ donation. No statistically significant difference was found in students' knowledge (t = -1.020, p = 0.310). Female students have statistically significantly more positive attitudes towards organ donation compared to male students (t = 0.119, p = 0.028). Students who have someone in their family who is waiting for an organ to be transplanted or who has undergone an organ transplant have a statistically significantly higher level of knowledge about organ donation than students who do not have anyone in that situation (t = 0.019, p = 0.038). No significant correlation was found between the level of knowledge and attitudes about organ donation. Conclusion: The conducted research showed that nursing students need to be more aware of the importance of organ donation. Transplantation activity needs to be included more in the study process and then similar research should be carried out again, which could realistically show whether the attitudes and knowledge in the field of organ donation have remained the same or have changed based on new acquired knowledge.
