Abstract Cilj: Utvrditi znanje prijediplomskih studenata Fakulteta zdravstvenih studija i Učiteljskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Rijeci o dodacima prehrani i izmjeriti njihovu spremnost za korištenje komplementarne i alternativne medicine (KAM).
Abstract (english) Aim:To determine the knowledge of undergraduate students of the Faculty of Health Studies and the Faculty of Teacher Education of the University of Rijeka on nutritional supplements and to measure their willingness to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
Methods: The research was conducted by use of a questionnaire on selected cohort of undergraduate students enrolled in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiological Technology and Midwifery courses at the Faculty of Health Studies and students of Early and Preschool Education at the Faculty of Teacher education. The questionnaire consisted of 3 parts. The first part was a true/false test of knowledge on nutritional supplements, while the second part was used to determine the frequency of use of 31 CAM methods. The third part served to determine the attitude towards CAM methods.
Results: 207 (35%) out of a total of 586 possible respondents participated in the research. The largest percentage of respondents were women (N=170; 82%), while there were N=36 (17%) men. One person did not want to express the gender (0.5%). The average age of the respondents was 21.14 years (SD=5,07). The research showed relatively low knowledge about nutritional supplements among students of both faculties (FHS 11%; FTE 18%), and specifically showed a very high percentage of failure on the knowledge test (FHS 89%; FTE 82%). According to the course, undergraduate students of Early and Preschool Education had a pass rate of 18%, while at FHS the highest pass rate was among students of Physiotherapy (14%) and Nursing (14%). The most frequently used CAM methods by students of both faculties were natural products - vitamins and minerals and probiotics. Among the mind-body practices, the most frequently used methods among the FHS students were spirituality and prayer and massage, while among the students of the Faculty of Teacher education, these were massage and aromatherapy. The respondents' attitude towards CAM was positive. The average value of the attitude expressed as median was 3,4 (range min 1,4 – max 4,9). The lowest level of attitude was determined for Nursing, and the highest for Midwifery and Physiotherapy.
Conclusion: The research showed a relatively low level of knowledge of Faculty of Health Studies and the Faculty of Teacher Education students on nutritional supplements. The most frequently used CAM methods among students of both faculties were natural products. Respondents showed a positive attitude towards CAM. Midwifery and Physiotherapy students showed the highest level of positive attitude.
