Abstract SAŽETAK
Abstract (english) ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: Advances in medicine in the treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases are leading to an increasing proportion of the global elderly population, thus increasing the need for nursing homes as well as for nurses/healthcare technicians. Homes for the elderly are one of the most stressful work environments for nurses/technicians, mostly due to poor organization of the work process, conflicting interpersonal relationships, and insufficient salaries.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to examine the level of stress among nurses and technicians employed in homes for the elderly and to compare the same regarding gender, work experience and sources of stress.
METHODS: 52 nurses and technicians employed in homes for the elderly throughout Croatia participated in the research, who voluntarily decided to participate in the research. Data were collected using an online questionnaire that contained 4 questions about sociodemographic data, and the level of stress and its sources were examined using the questionnaire "Stress at the workplace of hospital health workers". The questionnaire consists of 37 statements, and the level of stress perceived by the respondents is determined using a Likert scale. The result was obtained by adding up the responses, and higher values indicate a higher level of stress. Statistical data processing was performed using the Statistica 14.0.0.15 program (TIBCO Software Inc.), and the data were presented using the arithmetic mean and standard deviation and compared using the t-test for independent samples at the level of statistical significance p< 0.05 (5%) considering the set hypotheses.
RESULTS: By adding up the points, a result of 51.2 points was obtained, which proves that the level of professional stress among the respondents is moderate. Female respondents achieved an average score of 59.1 points, and male respondents 43.1 points, but the difference is not statistically significant. Also, no significant difference in the level of professional stress was proven with respect to the respondents' work experience, and the difference in questionnaire scores with respect to work experience was only 0.54 points. By grouping the points according to the defined subscales, Organization and finances and Conflicts and communication at work were singled out as the biggest sources of stress, while the least stress was caused by professional and intellectual demands.
CONCLUSION: Nurses and technicians employed in homes for the elderly experience a moderate level of professional stress, most often caused by poor organization, insufficient financial compensation, and conflicts at work.
