ZAKLJUČAK: Dijabetes melitus tip 2 značajno povećava morbiditet i mortalitet zahvaćene populacije, uzrokuje mnogobrojne dugoročne komplikacije i uzrokuje velike troškove liječenja.
Abstract (english) INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is a disease of the endocrine system that is diagnosed by elevated blood glucose levels and is one of the most common and fastest growing diseases in the world. It is predicted that by 2045, 693 million adults will fall ill from it globally.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the research was to determine the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in a convenient sample of citizens of the Republic of Croatia. The specific objectives of the research were to compare the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus regarding gender, level of education and place of residence of the respondents.
METHODS: Subjects who have not been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus, who voluntarily decided to participate in the research, were included in the research by chance. The data was collected through an online questionnaire published on the Google Forms platform, and the link to it was published through social networks and forwarded to the acquaintances of the author of the work. The first part of the questionnaire collected sociodemographic data, and the second part of the questionnaire assessed the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus using the FINDRISC questionnaire. Statistical processing of the data was carried out using the Statistica program, and the total FINDRISC results were presented in the form of median, mode and range, and categorically according to the author's instructions. FINDRISC scores were compared according to specific objectives using the Pearson Chi-square test at a statistical significance level of p <0.05 (5%).
RESULTS: 103 respondents participated in the research, most of whom were female (74.76%) and younger than 45 years old (66.02%). According to the FINDRISC results, the highest percentage of respondents (48.54%) have a low risk for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The highest proportion of male (61.54%) and female respondents (44.15%) have a low risk for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Considering the categorization of the FINDRISC results, all subjects had a low risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, with no significant differences regarding the level of education and place of residence.
CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus type 2 significantly increases the morbidity and mortality of the affected population, causes numerous long-term complications and causes high treatment costs.
