Ageing is natural physiological and irreversibile process accompanied by physical, psychological and social changes. Many biochemical, morphological and functional changes occur in organs and organ systems. With increasing age, the greatest changes occur in the locomotor system, such as reduced mobility, worse balance maintenance with the consequent risk of fals, a decrease in bone density. All these changes lead to a weakening of functional abilities, dependence of the help of others and a reduction in the quality of life. The functional ability of the elderly represents the performance of daily activities regardless of age and health status, and this refers to physical and psychological independence. In this research, a test was conducted that examines that functional abilities of the elderly through physical fitness. The standard test of assessing the functional abilities of the elderly is The Senior Fitness Test. The components of this test that are included in that research measure flexibility, balance and muscle strength in lower extremities. The flexibility tests are ”sit and reach test” test for the lower extremities and the ”back stretch” test for the upper extremities. Previous research shows that flexibility differs significantly with regard to gender, i. e. that women are more flexible than men. The correlation of lower limb muscle strength with balance and risk of falling was established. Hand grip strength is also important for performing daily activities. With aging grip strength is a weak due to reduced muscle strength and bimanual coordination control. It is concluded that men differ significantly in strength and endurance from women. Physical activity is any skeletal muscle work that causes an energy expenditure greater that than at rest. Physical activity is the most important behavior that accompanies many problems that arise with increasing age. With aging muscle and bone mass decreases, resulting in a loss of muscle strength. The gradual weakening of muscle strength causes a worse functional status of the elderly. It is important to measure the physical fitness of the elderly in order to detect mobility difficultes earlier and prolong their independence by choosing the right exercise.
