Abstract (english) | Seafaring is an extremely risky and demanding job that includes frequent overtime and night work, reduced quality and length of sleep and separation from family, all of which negatively affect the health of seafarers. Also, in order to bring satisfaction to the stressful days of work on board, they often resort to the consumption of tobacco products, alcohol and fatty foods. All of the above results in an increase of seafarers that are overweight and obese, and thus the risk of cardiovascular diseases among them. The aim of this research was to compare the eating habits, cigarette consumption and sleep duration of Croatian seafarers while working on board and when they are at home. The research was conducted using an online questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire contained questions about the respondents' general information (gender, age, body mass and height, level of education, marital status) and questions about their work (type of ship on which they are employed, place of work on the ship and rank). The second part of the questionnaire contained questions about eating habits, food on board, satisfaction with food on board, and health quality of life (cigarette smoking, exercise and sleep). The sample consisted of 300 respondents. The research showed that the eating habits of Croatian seafarers are not satisfactory either on board or at home. Of the 42% of respondents who declared themselves smokers, 23.8% of them consume more than 20 cigarettes a day when they are on board, but when at home there is twice less of them (11.9%). The respondents slept an average of 6.82 hours while working on board, which is significantly less than when they were at home (7.98 hours). |
