Neurologija posjeduje manji broj kreveta, a time i manji broj pacijenata te dobru podjelu radnih zadataka.
Abstract (english) Exhaustion at work or burnout syndrome is certainly one of the terms already described and known in western industrial countries and represents one of the important social as well as professional problems. Persons that work in the service professions, which include healthcare professionals, are most commonly exposed to professional stress.
This research examines the burnout syndrome of nurses regarding two departments – Department of Internal Medicine and Department of Neurology at Pula General Hospital. Comparing these two departments, we come to the conclusion that both are psychophysically demanding, the organization of work is almost identical, the hierarchical structure is also identical in both departments. Neurology has fewer number of beds, therefore less patients and a good division of work. Nurses are faced with smaller number of nursing diagnoses, medical examinations, and drug therapies. Nurses at the Internal Department are more burdened with administrative work, higher number of patients they care for, overtime, complex jobs, and constant unexpected situations. The main reason for nurses’ burnout at Pula General Hospital is the lack of nursing staff, that can be seen by the fact that nurses with longer employment often change their workplaces, which leads to work organization failures, causing also greater levels of stress.
AIM: The aim of the study is to examine the existence of burnout among nurses / technicians at the Department of Neurology / Internal Medicine at the General Hospital Pula.
RESPONDENTS AND METHODS: The research of the existence of the burnout syndrome was conducted at the Department of Internal Medicine and Neurology at General Hospital Pula. It includes nurses / technicians that work in both branches. The research included 50 subjects in the field of neurology and the same number of subjects that work at the internal department of the Pula General Hospital. A survey questionnaire consisting of 35 questions, divided into three sections, covering sociodemographic data, occupational stressors in the workplace and questions related to burnout syndrome was used as the research method.
RESULTS: The results have shown that nurses / technicians with longer work experience are more burdened with work, insufficient communication with colleagues, and that the sense of lack of nurses is more pronounced among nurses / technicians with longer work experience, compared to nurses with less work experience.
There is no significant difference in responses between respondents, except for the fact that employees at the Internal Department are more joking than at the Department of Neurology.
CONCLUSION: There is no significant difference between nurses / technicians at the Department of Neurology and the Department of Internal Medicine at Pula General Hospital regarding burnout syndrome.
