Currently in the Republic of Croatia, the Emergency Helicopter Medical Service (EHMS) operates only in the Dubrovačko-nretvanska County and the other two existing bases, on Krk for Primorsko-goranska and in Divulje for Splitsko-dalmatinska County, use helicopters that are not adequate to perform Emergency Helicopter Medical Service due to their size and long take-off time. For that reason, they transport patients who have already been taken care of by the ground team and transport them to the hospital for treatment. As the current state of EHMS in Croatia does not provide quality health care and does not comply with regulations approved by the European Union, in 2015. a pilot project was launched with two EHMS bases that housed helicopters that meet the criteria for performing emergency medical interventions along with staff whose training was focused on performing work in and around helicopters. This project was serving to determine the parameters within which EHMS will be developed in Croatia. In 2021., the Ministry of Health plans to launch EHMS in four bases in the Croatia in Zagreb Split, Rijeka and Osijek. With the realization of this project EHMS would, for the first time in the Republic of Croatia, operate according to all guidelines that include the number of helicopters in relation to the number if inhabitants, equipment and technical specifications of helicopters and staff training. Thus, for the first time, EHMS in the Republic of Croatia would operate only under Ministry of Health without external associates and the service would be avilable for the first time in the continental part of Croatia. The aim of this paper is to inform the reader about the Emergency Helicopter Medical Service and to give a brief overview of the entire operation of HEMS.
