Abstract (english) | INTRODUCTION: Anxiety during pregnancy can be general anxiety, specific pregnancy anxiety or specific fear of labour. Specific pregnancy anxiety is the key predictor of unfavourable labour outcomes. Anxiety stimulates nervous system activity and releases hormones, like noradrenaline, cortisol and adrenaline that consequently increase the severity of the labour pain, and the duration of the labour.
RESEARCH GOAL: The main goal of this thesis was to test differences in anxiety levels in relation to sociodemographic features, pregnancy features, the effect of partners being present during the labour, worrying about the COVID-19 pandemic impact on pregnancy and the labour, and the duration of the labour.
RESEARCH SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The research was conducted in General hospital Zabok and Hospital of Croatian Veterans and included 87 labouring women who voluntarily filled in the questionnaire with questions divided in four categories. The research was being conducted during and July 2021.
THE RESULTS: In the primipara group, there were 18 women (45%) without anxiety, 9 women (23%) with mild anxiety, and 13 women (33%) with severe anxiety. In the multiparous group, there were 27 women (57%) without anxiety, 6 women (13%) with mild anxiety, and 14 women (30%) with severe anxiety. In the primipara group with severe anxiety, women, who had their partners present, were less calm and less relaxed, and the multiparous women with severe anxiety were significantly less calm, relaxed, and self-confident. In the group containing all research subjects, connected with COVID pandemic, those women who had severe anxiety were much more worried about getting infected in the hospital and considerably more women believed that the pandemic affected their mental health during the pregnancy. For primiparas who had severe anxiety the labour lasted 6-8 hours (extended for 2 hours), and for multiparous women with severe anxiety the labour lasted 3-5 hours.
CONCLUSION: Primiparas are more anxious than multiparous women. The presence of the partners during the labour does not lead to significantly lower anxiety in labouring woman if they are severely anxious. To the severely anxious women COVID – 19 infection causes worry that they will get infected in the hospital, and they have the impression that pandemic considerably affects their mental health during the pregnancy. The labour is extended for 2 hours for both primiparas and multiparous when they are sever anixity and compared to women with no anxiety. |
