Abstract Uvod: Mišići meke trbušne stijenke zajedno sa svojim aponeurozama tvore osnovu prednjeg i lateralnog dijela trbušne stijenka. O samoj količini masnog tkiva ovisi i kvaliteta brojnih motoričkih sposobnosti poput brzine, okretnosti, snage i izdržljivosti. Užurbani život današnjice utječe na promjene u navikama ljudi, osobito u urbanoj populaciji i među mlađim dobnim skupinama. Zbog nedostatka slobodnog vremena, nepravilne prehrane i premalo tjelesne aktivnosti dolazi do nakupljanja masnih naslaga i povećanja razine potkožnog masnog tkiva.
Abstract (english) Introduction: The muscles of the soft abdominal wall together with their aponeuroses form the basis of the anterior and lateral part of the abdominal wall. They create a common system that enables to perform many functions. Therefore, it is very important that they are strong enough to be able to perform the functions. Nowadays, many people do not take care of the level of their own subcutaneous fat tissue that is visible and damages the overall health and body functioning. The quality of many motor skills such as speed, agility, strength and endurance depend on the amount of fat tissue itself. Today's hectic life affects changes in people's habits, especially in the urban population and among the younger age groups. Due to the lack of free time, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity, fat deposits accumulate and the level of subcutaneous fat tissue increases.
Research objective: The main goal of the research is to check the influence of the level of subcutaneous fat on the relative repetitive strength of the muscles of the soft abdominal wall in performing their trunk flexion function in male and female students of the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka. In addition to the main goal, 2 specific goals were defined to compare the level of subcutaneous fat between male and female students and the relative repetitive strength of soft abdominal wall muscles between male and female students.
Subjects and methods: 40 respondents who were students of the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka, between the ages of 18 and 25, took part in the research. Regarding gender, there were 19 male respondents and 21 female respondents. A caliper was used to measure the level of subcutaneous fat. The measurement was carried out 3 times in a row and the mean value was taken as the result. To assess the relative repetitive strength of the trunk flexor muscles, the trunk lift test was used, and it was measured only once. Pearson's correlation coefficient and Student's t-test for small independent samples were used to test the hypotheses. Both tests were calculated at the significance level of p < 0.05. The MedCalc Statistical Software program was used for statistical data processing.
Results: It was proved that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between the level of subcutaneous fat tissue and the relative repetitive strength of the muscles of the soft abdominal wall (r = -0.3910 p = 0.0126). Furthermore, a comparison of the level of subcutaneous fat between male and female subjects showed that there is no statistically significant difference in the level of subcutaneous fat between the sexes (p = 0.8801). A comparison of the relative repetitive strength of the trunk flexor muscles between male and female subjects proved that there is a statistically significant difference between the genders, that male students have a higher relative repetitive strength compared to female students (p = 0.0257).
Conclusion: A higher level of subcutaneous adipose tissue results in a lower relative repetitive strength of the soft abdominal wall muscles. There is no statistically significant difference in the level of subcutaneous fat between male and female students, while male students have a higher relative repetitive strength of the muscles of the soft abdominal wall compared to female students.
