Autism as a complex developmental disorder makes it difficult for an autistic individual to function independently and represents a challenge when integrating the individual into the social community. It specifically appears already in the first 3 years of life and is manifested by changed behavior in the cognitive and emotional area of the central nervous system. The cause is explained by research that points to a number of factors as possible causes of autism. The biomedical marker of autistic disorder is not yet known and, accordingly, long-term clinical observation is required. After establishing the primary diagnosis, the rehabilitation process requires complexity and continuity. The physiotherapist in the rehabilitation process belongs to the team model where, in cooperation with other specialists, he contributes to the reduction of unwanted forms of behavior and the more independent functioning of the autistic individual. Physiotherapy processes are individual, continuous, structured and have a positive effect in the comprehensive care approach for children with autism. The activity of the physiotherapist as a member of the professional team is aimed at improving motor skills, coordination and sensory integration. Sensory integration therapy, physiotherapy exercises, hydrotherapy and hippotherapy are used as the most common physiotherapy interventions. Through the rehabilitation process, the physiotherapist educates the parents for the purpose of easier understanding of the therapy and its further implementation when the child is at home.
