Aging causes many physical and psychological changes which can affect dietary needs and nutritional status. Patient's quality of life can be greatly disrupted by dysphagia caused by stroke. Vitamin D affects many compontents of the cardiovascular system including the regulation of arterial blood pressure. The aim of this research was to discover the nutritional status and status of vitamin D in patients who suffered a stroke. Lower concentrations of vitamin D were expected, especially in those patients who are overweight in comparison to the underfed and well-nourished. The research was conducted at Neurological Clinic in Rijeka and it included 20 patients who suffered a stroke in the period from 1st February 2017 to 1st May 2017. The methods, which were used to assess the nutritional status, are anthropometric methods and biochemical methods while we used the questionnaire NRS 2002 in order to assess the nutrition risk. The sample consisted 80% of men and 20% of women, and the youngest one had 32 years. The results of anthropometric measurments indicated that the half of examenees had the index of body weight above the referential values and that abdominal obesity was present in 90% of examenees. Inflamatory parametre (CRP) was gauged in 40% of the examenees. Vitamin D deficiency was found in 90% subjects, as in previous studies, and that confirms the hypothesis that deficiency of vitamin D is connected with high prevalence of stroke. In this research, there was no big difference in the amount of vitamin D present in the blood of overweight people compared to the blood of underfed and well-nourished people. According to this research, more than half of the patients were at nutrition risk, therefore the implementation of NRS 2002 as a method of assessing risk should be the first step towards upgrading the consciousness of the medical staff with regards to further nutritional interventions.
