Abstract (english) | Aim: Is to find out the level of anxiety among the elderly living in nursing home regarding to their gender, and also the importance to point out the correlation between the duration of the time period and the adaptation to the new environment with anxiety occurring in the elderly living in the nursing home.
Methods: Participants are users of the Nursing home "Kantrida" located in Rijeka and the research was conducted in the period of 19.07.2018. until 26.07.2018. 60 people from that nursing home participated in it. The respondents were divided into three categories. The first category was the respondents who were there for one month, while the second group was the respondents who were in the nursing home for up to one year. The third group were the respondents who stayed in the nursing home for more than a year. The data were collected through face to face interviews. All of the older people participated to the study were asked to
provide written informed consent. The older people were informed about the purpose of the study
and what should be expected of them. Participants were assured of rights of refusal to participate in or to withdraw from the study at any stage without any negative consequences.
A examination form was used and it that was completely anonymous. Descriptive data in the paper are presented in tabular and graphical form, in the form of frequencies and percentages. To investigate the significance of the difference, the Hi-squared test was used. The level of statistical significance was set at 95% (p <0.05). All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 16 statistical software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).
Results: Hypothesis 1 was confirmed: "Anxiety is more common among older women than older men in the nursing home for the elderly." Namely, a statistically significant number of women responded positively to question no. 8: "Do you feel too much concern for everyone around you?"
Hypothesis 2 was confirmed: "The higher level of anxiety of older people in a nursing home for the elderly is present in the first month of residence in the nursing home but over a period of one month to one year, and over a period longer than one year", since respondents that were in a nursing home less than a month, they feel at a much higher rate of discomfort, and they were more worried when they found out they are going to nursing home.
Hypothesis 3 was also confirmed: "Anxiety is more present in those nursing home-users for the elderly who have not deliberately decided to go there", since those who did not choose to go by they will, have a much greater sense of momentary discomfort when they find out they are going at nursing home, while at a significantly lower rate they believe that going in nursing home is the right decision and that their departure is the best financial solution for their family.
Conclusion: All three hypotheses are confirmed. The level of anxiety is present among elderly living in the nursing home. Longer period living at nursing home, affects the reduction of anxiety in the elderly people living in nursing home. |
