INTRODUCTION: Acute poisoning is an acute exposure to toxic substances that represents a major public health problem. The most common cases of acute poisoning include the consumption of alcohol, drugs and pesticides. GOAL: The main goal of this research is to examine acute poisonings in the General Hospital "dr. Ivo Pedišić" Sisak in the period from April 1, 2020. until April 1, 2022. years. The specific goals are to determine the cause of acute poisonings in the General Hospital "dr. Ivo Pedišić" Sisak in the mentioned period about gender, age, and determine the proportion of acute poisonings with intention. RESPONDENTS AND METHODS: For the purposes of this research, a retrospective analysis of data from medical records was carried out, which included all patients who were admitted to emergency departments with the diagnosis of acute poisoning. The sampling of respondents was done by choosing a convenient sample based on the diagnosis. The research results indicate a greater representation of the male gender in cases of acute poisoning (62%). The age of the respondents was divided into four categories, and the research showed that the majority of cases were among people of middle age (30 - 49 years). Men aged 39 to 49 are the most represented patients of acute poisoning. The paper divides the cases into three categories based on the type of toxic substance, and alcohol is responsible for 62.64% of the cases. Respondents were more often poisoned not intentionally but with intention, which indicates a percentage of 88.12% of accidental poisonings. CONCLUSION: The results of the research shows the mentality of respondents whose intention does not lead to suicide, but depends on the level of self-knowledge of harmful substances, that is, on the lack of knowledge about possible harmful effects.
