An epidural block or analgesia is an anesthetic procedure that is used to reduce pain. The technique is completely simple and safe if performed under the rules of profession on the part of a specialist anesthesiologist. The anesthetist is obliged to explain to the parents the technique of catheter setup and possible complications and side effects before taking the procedure, and obtain the informed consent they have to read and sign. Advanced surgery epidural analgesia is increasingly in circulation, although any anesthesiologic method can cause possible complications. By increasing the scope of use, it has become the subject of ever increasing number of clinical trials and consideration of existing literature all for the purpose of establishing the benefits of epidural analgesia over general analgesia such as decreasing mortality rates and cognitive abilities of patients. Pain is the biochemical, physical and psychological reaction of the organism to various mechanical, chemical or thermal stimuli that are above the threshold of sensitivity and is one of the main indications of the need for good analgesia, especially in children. The age of the child, surgical procedure, childhood illness, co-morbidity and other data taken by anamnestic procedures will play a role in the anesthesiologist's decision to select anesthesia type. Regional, epidural analgesia is a relatively new approach to childhood analgesia, however its application in clinical practice is increasingly showing good analgesia during the surgical procedure as well as in the early preoperative period. In young children and infants due to the inability to cooperate is often applied with a combination of general anesthesia to make the epidural catheter easier to introduce.
