The topic of the paper is to show the clinical outcomes of patients after inguinal hernia operation that were performed through one day surgery during the year 2018. The aim is to show the principles of one day surgery and the preparation of patients for inguinal hernia operation through one day surgery. The research was conducted retrospectively in the period from 1.1.2018. until 31.12.2018. at the Clinic for Surgery of CHC Rijeka. Data were obtained from the Ibis system. The research included 136 patients who were operated during this period through one day surgery. It included the operation technique, the type of anesthesia that was applied, the complications due to which the patients needed to be hospitalized, and subsequent complications that did not require hospitalization. Out of 136 patients included in the study 91% were males, 72% of patients were operated by Lichtenstein technique, 28% by Trabucco technique. No surgical procedure was completed by general anesthesia, 94% of operations were performed in the spinal anesthesia, and 6% in local anesthesia. The number of patients requiring hospitalization was 7%, due to early postoperative complications: 45% of patients had hematomas, 33% postpuncture headaches and 2% urinary retention. Late postoperative complications occurred in 27% of patients, of which seroma in 46% of patients, hematoma in 30%, infection in 21% and 3% had postoperative chronic pain. In conclusion, the most common postoperative complications requiring additional hospitalization are hematomas and postpuncture headaches. A small number of early complications, recurrences, and unplanned treatment extensions suggest that one day surgery is a safe way of treating inguinal hernia. However, in our hospital more patients are still treated through hospitalization.
