Abstract UVOD: Pitanje života i smrti, vječito je pitanje i tema mnogih rasprava od najranije ljudske povijesti.
Abstract (english) INTRODUCTION: A matter of life and death, it has been an eternal question and topic of much debate since the earliest human history. Advances in medicine have improved the treatment of diseases, modified the pattern of getting sick and dying of the population, with an increase in chronic diseases. Because of this phenomenon, the need has developed to correctly define concepts such as euthanasia and disthanasia and accordingly adopt concrete and unambiguous laws, which on the one hand would allow everyone basic human rights and patients' rights, and on the other hand, ensure that these rights are not abused. The nursing profession at its very core is a profession that defends, respects life, but it is here that the controversy between euthanasia and distantness begins. When healing is no longer possible, care is needed to respect the integrity of the sick person because care is the essence of the nursing profession.
RESEARCH GOAL: The purpose of this paper is to examine the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students about euthanasia and dysentery, to determine how familiar students are with these concepts and which factors (knowledge, personal and work experience, culture, religion...) most affect their attitudes.
RESPONDENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on a random sample among nursing students of the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka (FZSRI). The survey was conducted through an anonymous online questionnaire and knowledge test, during June and July 2023. The preparation and statistical processing of data was done in Microsoft Excel (version 11, Microsoft Corporation, USA) and STATISTICA 12, Tibco, California. The statistical significance is set to p-value less than or equal to 0.05.
RESULTS: N=28 respondents (M=18%, Ž=82%). The average age of the respondents is 35 years. Most respondents are believers-monotheists (68%), and as many as 89% of respondents have encountered a terminally ill person in their private lives. Nursing students' knowledge of euthanasia and dysplasia is of a mediocre level.
CONCLUSION: The results of the research have shown that there is a need for better education of nursing students about the concepts of euthanasia and disthanasia at the undergraduate and graduate level of nursing studies, primarily with the aim of better understanding these concepts and providing better care for patients in the terminal phase of the disease. Personal experiences and religion have no significant influence on attitudes.
