Dynamic renal scintigraphy is an imaging diagnostic nuclear medicine procedure used to display the morphology, function, and drainage through the renal collecting system. As a follow-up to dynamic scintigraphy, an additional imaging segment, indirect radionuclide cystography (IRC), is possible, which evaluates and detects vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), the backward flow of urine from the bladder into the pyelon or ureter. It is performed without bladder catheterization and is most often used in children. This paper describes the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals and the patient and the detailed examination procedure. This research aims to establish the frequency of referral of children for examination by gender, referral diagnosis, the frequency of performing the procedure in addition to dynamic scintigraphy, the frequency of performing other diagnostic methods, and the detection of vesicoureteral reflux using this method. Documentation of 79 patients (children) who underwent indirect radionuclide cystography out of a total of 302 children referred to the Clinical Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka for dynamic renal scintigraphy during 2022 and 2023 was retrospectively analyzed. It was concluded that indirect radionuclide cystography is a nuclear medicine diagnostic procedure often performed as an extension of dynamic renal scintigraphy. The examination is more reliable in grading and monitoring VUR, but it is used less frequently in establishing a diagnosis. The research confirms that VUR most commonly presents clinically with urinary tract infection and is more frequent in female children, resulting in a higher frequency of examination in this group. Lower radiation exposure and the avoidance of catheterization make indirect radionuclide cystography a more acceptable diagnostic method than others that can detect VUR, which is especially important in children.
